Virginia Beach

“A land not to be excelled by any other what-so-ever.”
Sir Ralph Lane, Spring 1586

The story of Virginia Beach has so many fascinating chapters that I can barley do it justice here. Of course, the first landing of British settlers is the most notable aspect of history, but when you delve a bit deeper many other fascinating histories sprang from this location and Virginia Beach continues to create historic memories for summer travelers seeking the perfect summer vacation spot. For instance, the Wreck of the Benjamin F. Poole, a coal ship that came to rest somewhere between 16th and 17th streets during a violent storm. Then there is Virginia Beach's first witch, Grace Sherwood, who survived her dunking and after eight years in prison was released and lived in her home until she was 80! Without doubt, the Revolutionary war has left its historical mark on this area as well as the infamous Pirate, Blackbeard!
Virginia Beach offers a summer full of events and activities to be sure you won't be bored! On the Boardwalk in July there is the Chalk the Walk ART Explosion. A “wanna-be” artist's opportunity to show off their talent in a medium all ages can enjoy.
Virginia Beach is beautiful in the daytime, but there's nothing like those sultry summer nights when the fun really begins. Every night during the summer take a stroll down Beach Street USA and enjoy dozens of great street performers. They sing, play music, dance, juggle and even perform close-up magic turning Atlantic Avenue into one big party that the whole family can enjoy.
There are several stages along the boardwalk where you will find nightly entertainment in the summer and most weekends in the spring and fall. They are located at 24th Street, 17th Street, and 7th Street and there is a new park located at 31st Street.
If sports are your amusement of choice, well, plan a little recovery time after you get home. Between Amusement Parks, Canoeing & Kayaking, Bicycling, Fishing, Golf, Parasailing, Surfing, Volleyball, Swimming and Diving, Wave Runners and Jet Skis', whew! What a ride!
There is also another side to the Virginia Beach area that you may be interested to explore. The Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. (A.R.E.), is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 1931 by Christian mystic, Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), to research and explore transpersonal subjects such as holistic health, philosophy, dreams and dream interpretation, intuition, and contemporary spirituality.   more >>
